You’ll receive a penalty if you miss the deadline for submitting your tax return or paying your bill. You’ll receive a penalty of £100 if your tax return is up to three months late. You’ll have to pay more if it’s later than three months, or if you pay your tax bill late.

You can appeal against a penalty if you have a reasonable excuse.

By law, you must keep the records you need to fill in a complete and correct tax return. If your return is incomplete and you are then found to owe tax, you may also have to pay interest and a penalty.
